We welcomed a very special guest at our Annual Meeting on 4th November - Emma, the W.I. Icon from Bramley Lite W.I. Here she is with our President, Liz Wakeman. |
After the official business members and guests enjoyed a spectacular fashion show to celebrate the W.I.'s 90th Anniversary. Each decade was represented in costume and music - ending with our idea of Future Fashion - we had the W.I. President from Mars to model it for us! |
Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month (except August)at 7.30 pm in the Methodist Hall, High Street, Lee-on-the-Solent. |
Welcome to Lee-on-the-Solent - where you will find:- |
A one-mile long beach and promenade with wonderful views across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. |
Shops, schools, churches, cafes, clubs of all types, a thriving Community Centre and several pubs, all with a wonderful welcome. |
Not just the usual seaside attractions, though. If you are a woman, lady, dolly bird, dame or whatever, as long as you are female and over 18 you are eligible to visit or join Solent Evening Women's Institute. |
Our venue is accessible to disabled people, who are very welcome as visitors or members. |
What does Solent Evening W.I. offer to women? |
A very friendly and lively W.I. that meets in the evening to enable working women and mothers of young children to join. |
Monthly meetings with opportunities to make and renew friendships. |
Interesting talks and discussions on a wide range of subjects. |
Extra activities, such as a guided walk each month, crafts and drama(and we always welcome new ideas for activities). We also enjoy outings - last year we visited the New Forest Show, Salisbury for sight-seeing and a cookery demonstration and the Greyhound Racing at Portsmouth. |
Links with other W.I.s in local, county and national venues. We are one of 8 W.I.s in The Haven Group which is an informal grouping within The Hampshire Federation. Haven Group organises two group meetings and a Carol Service every year and arranges Group outings. There was a very successful trip to Northumberland in July. Haven Group meetings provide the opportunity to book speakers or demonstrators who are beyond the means of an individual W.I. Haven Group also forms the first competitive stage in County competitions, such as Bowls, Skittles, Darts and Quizzes, all of which we enjoy. In September our Quiz team will be competing in the final - we have never won it yet, but we don't give up hope. |
Membership of the W.I. offers so many varied opportunities: |
We discuss matters of local and national importance and have our views put to the government, via the W.I. |
We receive information about County courses covering every imaginable subject, sport, hobby and craft. |
A chance to win a Solent Evening Bursary for a course at Denman, the W.I. National College where there even more options for learning and enjoying new skills, among friendly fellow-members. |
