COLDEN COMMON EVENING WI

A MODERN VOICE FOR WOMEN & SOMETHING FOR ALL

The WI offers women the opportunity of sharing friendship and learning new skills.
We aim to help widen horizons and together
to influence local, national and even international affairs.
******
Membership now stands at 50 and we have had to start a waiting list for new members.
However we often welcome visitors to share
the friendship and fun of our meetings.
We meet at The Church Rooms, 154 Main Road,Colden Common, SO21 1TJ.
From 7.15pm on the 2nd Thursday of each month.
For more details please call:
President: Sue Kirkpatrick 01962 712912
Secretary: Pam Glasspool 01962 711350
At monthly meetings we have a varied mix of interesting speakers and demonstrators.
We also enjoy many other social activities including:
Monthly short rambles & regular outings; Healthy Options; Darts & Skittles;
Crafty sessions; Charity events; Competitions & Quizzes.
Our Darts team train at the Dog and Crook Thursday lunchtimes and came very close runners up in the 2011 county final,
whilst our Skittles and Quiz teams did very well in Group events.
Several Theatre and cinema trips have been enjoyed during the winter months.
One of our members recently held a stained glass 'come and try' workshop in her home for members to learn a new skill.
An outing to Bath with a 5 mile walk is booked
as are places at the 'Filling Containers' demonstration at Hilliers Garden Centre

QUEEN BEE PROJECT
Both we and our Trainee beekeeper Denise were devastated when all the bees in our WI Hive
succombed to an attack of the Varroa mite and died suddenly.
We are all determined to carry on.
Defra have agreed our existing hive and honey can be used by
the replacement swarm that we hope to purchase soon.
Denise has researched newer, hopefully better organic methods to
control any future attack from this lethal mite.
The hive is kept in the garden of one of our members and we are grateful to local experienced beekeepers 'The Kellys' who oversee our project.
Viewings and updates will be arranged as soon as everything is up and buzzing happily again.

**************

We are fully involved in the local community and take an active part in Village Life.
Four 3m long wild plants seed mats have been purchased and planted along verges in the village.
Our Village Regal Scarecrow Trail is planned for 2nd - 10th June with over 40 scarecrows dotted around the village to find.

Our Royal Jumbilee stall at the village fete will raise much needed funds for our Bee project.
CCWI are supporting the Jubilee Rock night raising funds for the old Holy Trinity Church building.

We support many different charities including
The Hampshire Air Ambulance, Breast Cancer Care, Help the Heroes, Children in Need, Macmillan Nurses, The Alzheimer's Society and ACWW(Associated Country Women of the World)
AN 'UPLIFTING COLLECTION'
In 2011 we collected 1271 bras of all shapes, sizes and colours in aid of Air Ambulance.
Our spectacular handover of the bras took place when we were loaned a lorry from Veolia Recycling ltd to take our bright pink sacks and washing lines of bras to
the Thruxton Air Ambulance Airbase.
It was a great fun day out which helped a good cause.
Our recent collection for
the Global Hearts for Children
'PANTS,PADS AND A POUND' appeal
which coincided with our 35th Birthday resulted in 13 hand made wool blankets, 60 pairs of pants, 35 packets of sanitary pads and £35 being handed to the charity.
