In October 2007 at the Autumn Council Meeting,
Hampshire WI members adopted the following resolution.
‘HCFWI urge local authorities to provide safe working spaces
for the operation of brothels.’
1.Our members were alarmed and horrified at the recent spate
of violent attacks on and murders of women
working as prostitutes in Suffolk
and felt it was important to open up
the issue of prostitution for debate and discussion.
2.There was a strong feeling among members
that it is time for women to discuss women’s issues,
such as prostitution, in an informed, rational, supportive and compassionate way.
3.Members are seriously concerned about the violence
being experienced by prostitutes, for their safety
and about the often exploitative
and underground nature of prostitution
such as ongoing and regular abuse from pimps.
4. Members felt very strongly that health issues need to be addressed
and believe these women should be able to access free,
regular, high quality health care in supportive environments.
Following debates on the subject the Hampshire Federation
believes that decriminalisation or licensing of prostitution,
in close working partnership with local health authorities,
to ensure legal protection and safety standards,
would better the lives of thousands of women
thereby helping to reduce violence and exploitation
and improve their safety and health.
Following positive comments in the press,
Channel 4 have taken the presenter and seconder of the resolution,
Jean Johnson and Shirley Landels,
on a fact finding mission to America, Amsterdam
and New Zealand at Channel 4’s expense.
The tour was outlined by Jean at the Spring Council Meeting.
The programme showing the findings
of our two Hampshire Federation members
was shown on Channel 4 on Sunday August 3rd.
Jean and Shirley have also appeared
on The Richard and Judy Show and Breakfast Television.
