In October 2007 at the Autumn Council Meeting,
Hampshire WI members adopted the following resolution.
‘HCFWI urge local authorities to provide safe working spaces
for the operation of brothels.’
1.Our members were alarmed and horrified at the recent spate
of violent attacks on and murders of women
working as prostitutes in Suffolk
and felt it was important to open up
the issue of prostitution for debate and discussion.

2.There was a strong feeling among members
that it is time for women to discuss women’s issues,
such as prostitution, in an informed, rational, supportive and compassionate way.
3.Members are seriously concerned about the violence
being experienced by prostitutes, for their safety
and about the often exploitative
and underground nature of prostitution
such as ongoing and regular abuse from pimps.

4. Members felt very strongly that health issues need to be addressed
and believe these women should be able to access free,
regular, high quality health care in supportive environments.

Following debates on the subject the Hampshire Federation
believes that decriminalisation or licensing of prostitution,
in close working partnership with local health authorities,
to ensure legal protection and safety standards,
would better the lives of thousands of women
thereby helping to reduce violence and exploitation
and improve their safety and health.

Following positive comments in the press,
Channel 4 have taken the presenter and seconder of the resolution,
Jean Johnson and Shirley Landels,
on a fact finding mission to America, Amsterdam
and New Zealand at Channel 4’s expense.
The tour was outlined by Jean at the Spring Council Meeting.

The programme showing the findings
of our two Hampshire Federation members
was shown on Channel 4 on Sunday August 3rd.
Jean and Shirley have also appeared
on The Richard and Judy Show and Breakfast Television.

HCC Caring for Hampshire’s carers
Carers are growing in number across Hampshire
and Hampshire County Council has recognised
that not only do people need to recognise when they have a carers role,
but that carers should have access to support services for themselves.
There are around 120, 000 carers in Hampshire
and that number will continue to grow as more
and more people live for longer requiring support and services.
Many of these carers aren’t unpaid
and they carry out all sorts of tasks
from helping with shopping to giving 24 hour care.
The County Council is working with organisations across Hampshire
to improve life for carers, they all have three key aims;
• To secure information, services and support for carers of all ages
• To secure services which are flexible and able to change in line
with people's unique circumstances, enabling independence and choice
• To make sure carers can access services
and support no matter where they live

Work has already begun in some of these areas,
carers now have access to an Emergency Respite Service.
This free service has been designed to make sure
there is back up and support for carers
who are unable to care for an individual
because of an emergency situation.
If you would like to know more about CAPE
(Carers Action Planning for Emergencies) simply call 01794 519495.
It is vital that all carers know they have a right
to an assessment of their needs.
This assessment will ensure they are getting the support they need,
and help to balance work and family with their caring role.
If you would like an assessment
please call your Adult Social Care area office.

The "Guide to Residential Care" lists over 600 residential and nursing homes
in Hampshire, by area. It discusses the alternatives to residential care,

and includes a checklist of questions to ask when visiting homes.
